Understand the test before training for it

The UCAT ANZ pattern—and what actually matters.

The test is approximately two hours and cannot be paused under standard conditions. Each subtest is separately timed, so success depends on accuracy, judgment and knowing when to move on.

Time available by subtest

Verbal Reasoning
44 Q · 22 min
Decision Making
35 Q · 37 min
Quantitative Reasoning
36 Q · 26 min
Situational Judgement
69 Q · 26 min

Bars compare test minutes, not difficulty. Question counts and timings follow current official UCAT ANZ specifications. Candidates should always verify the latest guidelines for their test cohort.

✓ The right pattern

  • Learn question patterns and heuristics first
  • Build accuracy before rushing speed
  • Practise with realistic timed sections
  • Flag, triage and return strategically
  • Deeply analyse errors and cognitive traps

× The wrong pattern

  • Rush blindly into full mocks without technique
  • Spend 2+ minutes stubbornly on one question
  • Bring outside assumptions into passages
  • Count questions solved without reviewing errors
  • Apply a generic, one-size-fits-all study plan

Verbal Reasoning: protect every second

44 questions in 22 minutes means roughly 30 seconds per question. Map the passage layout, scan for question keywords, read surrounding context and answer strictly from text evidence.

Comprehensive Subtest Syllabus

Inside the five sections of UCAT ANZ.

Each cognitive subtest evaluates a distinct facet of mental agility and critical reasoning required in medical school.

Verbal Reasoning (VR)

44 Q · 22 Min (~30s / q)

Evaluates candidates' ability to critically evaluate information presented in a written passage without prior knowledge.

  • Passage Types: History, philosophy, literature, natural sciences, and social commentary.
  • Question Styles: True/False/Cannot Tell and Multiple Choice comprehension.
  • Mastery Strategy: Keyword mapping, skimming techniques, and eliminating unwarranted inferences.
Key Focus: Never bring outside world knowledge. If the text does not directly confirm a statement, the answer must be "Cannot Tell".

Decision Making (DM)

35 Q · 37 Min (~63s / q)

Tests the ability to make reasoned decisions and logical conclusions using complex information and arguments.

  • Question Types: Syllogisms, Logic Games, Interpreting Information, Venn Diagrams, and Probabilistic Reasoning.
  • Evaluation: Requires drawing valid conclusions from given premises under ambiguity.
  • Mastery Strategy: Translating language into conditional shorthand (A → B) and diagramming relationships.
Key Focus: Pay close attention to quantifier words: "all", "some", "none", "majority", and "only if".

Quantitative Reasoning (QR)

36 Q · 26 Min (~43s / q)

Assesses numeric problem-solving skills, data interpretation, percentages, geometry, and unit conversions.

  • Question Topics: Tables, charts, compound growth, exchange rates, ratios, geometry, and statistical trends.
  • Tools: On-screen basic calculator and physical whiteboard scratch pad.
  • Mastery Strategy: Mental estimation shortcuts, rounding approximations, and strategic calculator use.
Key Focus: Do not use the on-screen calculator for simple math. Mental estimation saves 15-20 seconds per item.

Situational Judgement (SJT)

69 Q · 26 Min (~22s / q)

Measures candidates' capacity to understand real-world medical situations, identify ethical dilemmas, and respond appropriately.

  • Focus Themes: Medical ethics, patient autonomy, confidentiality, team conflict, honesty, and safety.
  • Grading: Band 1 (Exceptional) down to Band 4 (Poor). Most universities require Band 1 or Band 2.
  • Mastery Strategy: Direct alignment with General Medical Council (GMC) and Australian Medical Council guidelines.
Key Focus: Patient safety and informed consent always take precedence over convenience, colleague feelings, or protocol.

Medicine after university

Already have a degree? Medicine may still be within reach.

Graduate medical entry is a different pathway from school-leaver entry. Most domestic applicants need an eligible bachelor’s degree, a competitive academic record, GAMSAT and an interview—but criteria vary by university.

Undergraduate route

School to medicine

For students applying during or immediately after secondary school.

  1. Plan subjects, prerequisites and academic targets
  2. Prepare for UCAT ANZ during Year 12
  3. Apply to eligible undergraduate medical programs
  4. Prepare for university MMI interviews
Graduate route

Bachelor’s degree to medicine

For applicants who have completed, or are completing, an eligible degree.

  1. Review degree eligibility and GPA weighting
  2. Plan and prepare for GAMSAT sections I, II, and III
  3. Compare GEMSAS consortium and direct applications
  4. Prepare for graduate MMI or panel interviews

Other graduate-entry possibilities

  • University-specific direct application pathways (e.g. Monash Graduate MD)
  • Selected guaranteed or provisional-entry pathways
  • Rural, regional, and Indigenous entry streams with adjusted thresholds
  • MCAT pathways for international applicants
  • Honours or postgraduate master's study where included in GPA calculations

Why Unwind Learning

A preparation partner—not another passive question bank.

Question banks are ubiquitous. Our value is turning preparation into a structured, accountable, and supported process.

A plan built around one student

We begin with the candidate’s starting diagnostics, available time, and target pathway. The plan dynamically evolves as their weekly portal metrics indicate.

Teaching plus accountability

Tutors explain difficult logic, review timed work, and assign clear priorities for the week ahead with detailed session feedback notes.

Official resources come first

We calibrate our teaching directly against official UCAT ANZ question styles, scoring matrices, and Pearson VUE interface conditions.

Support beyond the test

UCAT is one third of the medical entry puzzle. We coordinate ATAR prerequisites, university preferences, and MMI interview coaching.

Medical pathway perspective

Guidance informed by qualified professionals.

Medical-entry decisions involve more than a test score. We bring practical health-science perspective into pathway conversations while keeping UCAT teaching with appropriately verified tutors.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions by candidates & parents.

Clear, direct answers regarding test timing, scaling, and preparation.

When should my child begin preparing for UCAT?

Most successful candidates begin foundational familiarisation in late Year 11 (November/December) or early Year 12 (February). Preparing 4 to 6 months in advance allows candidates to build accuracy before developing speed, avoiding test-day burnout.

What is considered a competitive UCAT score in Australia?

For undergraduate medical programs like Monash, UNSW, and UQ, a competitive score generally ranges between 2,950 and 3,150+ (approximately the 90th to 96th percentile). Cutoffs vary slightly by university, applicant state quotas, and rural eligibility.

How does the Student & Parent Portal work?

When you enquire or enroll, an active student profile is created. Students and parents receive login access to view scheduled Google Meet sessions, tutor feedback, homework assignments, and official mock exam trajectory charts in real time.

Is UCAT ANZ score scaled or raw?

UCAT ANZ scores are scaled. Each of the four cognitive subtests produces a scaled score from 300 to 900, giving a total maximum score of 3,600. Situational Judgement is scored separately into Band 1 (highest) through Band 4.

Can a candidate sit the UCAT test more than once?

Candidates may only sit UCAT ANZ once per testing cycle (July to August). If a student does not achieve their target score in Year 12, they can re-sit the exam the following year as a gap-year or university applicant.

Does Unwind Learning help with the Medical Interview (MMI)?

Yes. After UCAT testing in July, we provide dedicated Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) coaching covering medical ethics, communication under pressure, empathy stations, and health-system scenario questions.
